WHAT IS CANINE MASSAE THERAPY?
Canine massage therapy utilizes massage therapy techniques associated with Swedish massage and deep tissue massage. The purpose of canine massage is to bring comfort to the dog, decrease pain, increase circulation, release tension, and bring an overall sense of relaxation and contentment to your beloved friend.
BENEFITS OF CANINE MASSAGE
WHERE IS A CANINE MASSAGE THERAPY SESSION HELD?
Preferably, the canine massage therapy session will be held someone your dog is comfortable other than the dog's home. Dogs naturally protect their home and can become aggressive toward the therapist. A neutral ground is more beneficial to the dog and can allow the dog to better relax and maximize the benefits received from the massage.
WHAT THE OWNER SHOULD EXPECT DURING A CANINE MASSAGE
The first step of any canine massage session is to acquaint and get the dog comfortable with the therapist. This can happen in a few minutes or may take a majority of the session. Massaging an uncomfortable tense dog is counterproductive. This is why acclimating the dog to the therapist is crucial.
During the first 5-10 minutes of the first massage session the dog may appear to be apprehension as he becomes accustomed to the feeling of the massage. As the massage progresses the dog will visibly appear to relax more. Relaxation can be observed by the dog laying flat on his stomach or side, or even rolling over to show his belly. Some dogs will fall asleep during the session and may even drool.
After the session some dogs may sleep more as their body is able to fully relax. Other dogs may show a quick increase in energy. Each dog will react to the massage in their own way as they are individuals. With additional massage sessions the owner may observe positive improvements in behavior (i.e., more energetic, less aggressive, less pain, etc.).
