WHERE DID SWEDISH MASSAGE ORIGINATE?
Swedish massage dates back to the 1830s and was developed by Per Henrik Ling of Sweden. The massage techniques were developed to address the strain created by repetitive movements. As Swedish massage developed the strokes that are commonly used in various modalities today were put into practice. Swedish massage arrived to the United States in the 1850s. Swedish massage is the basis of almost all massage modalities and remains one of the most popular requested types of massage today.
WHAT CAN I EXPECT DURING A SWEDISH MASSAGE?
The therapist will use a light to moderate pressure and include slow, gentle, mostly gliding strokes. At Rejuvenate Massage, a Swedish massage is a full body massage unless the client requests a specific area of the body be excluded.
A full-body massage includes massage to the head, face, neck, back, arms, hands, legs, and feet.
The client will remain draped and covered throughout the entirety of the massage. Only the area of the body being actively massaged will be undraped at any given time. At no time, will the pelvic region or chest be undraped/exposed.
BENEFITS OF A SWEDISH MASSAGE:
The main goal of Swedish massage is to relax, energize, and refresh the body.
Swedish massage may also provide the following benefits:
SWEDISH MASSAGE VS. DEEP TISSUE/THERAPEUTIC MASSAGE:
Swedish massage generally uses a lighter touch than a therapeutic massage.
Swedish massage generally does not target any specific area of the body, but rather includes the whole body.
Therapeutic massage typically uses a deeper pressure than a Swedish massage.
Therapeutic massage targets individual muscles or specific groups of muscles to address specific complaints affecting a specific area of the body such as pain, reduced range of motion, or recovery from an injury.
